Three Types Of Sugar Art To Explore

Posted on: 16 August 2019

If you love art and also food, then there is an exciting hobby you should consider exploring. It's called sugar art, and it involves creating sculptures out of sugar. The art form is pretty broad. Basically, as long as the only ingredients you use to create your sculpture are sugar, water, and perhaps some coloring, it qualifies as sugar art. As such, there are a few different forms of sugar art to consider playing around with.

Pulled Sugar Art

Have you ever seen someone pulling taffy, perhaps at a fair? What they were basically doing was pulling warm sugar into strings. The taffy, of course, had some added flavorings—but you can pull plain sugar and water in the same way if it is heated to a specific temperature. You would pour the hot sugar mixture onto a silicone mat and start folding it over itself using a spatula. Once the sugar cools enough, you'll start using your hands to repeatedly pull the sugar into strings. You can then shape the sugar into ribbons and other thin creations.

Cast Sugar Art

People use molds to create clay and chocolate art. Why not sugar art? Generally, to make cast sugar art, you will use a stainless steel mold. The type intended for use with wax or chocolate will work just fine. You will start with hot, liquid sugar in an array of colors. You can paint some of it into the mold for color accents, and once it has hardened, fill the mold up the rest of the way with clear or solid-colored sugar. Once the sugar has set, you will gently warm the mold to release your creations.

Spun Sugar

Cotton candy is basically spun sugar. The sugar is heated and then spun to create thin threads. You can create interesting works of art with this spun sugar, especially if you have it in a few different colors. Let some of the threads accumulate at the end of a stick, shape them into a heart or a ball, or even let them spread onto a piece of paper. The possibilities are really endless—you just need a sugar spinner. Buying a used cotton candy machine is the easiest way to get one.

Sugar can be used to create some beautiful and interesting works of art. Which type are you most excited to try? Contact companies like Truly Mad Plastics LLC for more information about sugar art.
